The Special Marriage Act, 1954

India's civil marriage law — a form of marriage open to any two persons whatever their religion: the conditions, the notice and its publication, objections and inquiries, the declaration and certificate, registering marriages celebrated in other forms, the consequences for succession, restitution, judicial separation, nullity, divorce and divorce by mutual consent, jurisdiction, alimony, custody and appeals. An Act to provide a special form of marriage in certain cases, for the registration of such and certain other marriages and for divorce.

BE it enacted by Parliament in the Fifth Year of the Republic of India as follows:―

India Code's text is as on 15 April 2026 and carries the ten amending Acts up to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019; a footnote records the Act's extension to Sikkim in 2021. The print's last two pages, a garbled duplicate of the Statement of Objects and Reasons, are left out.
