The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955

India's law of Hindu marriage — who the Act applies to, the conditions for a valid marriage, ceremonies and registration, restitution of conjugal rights and judicial separation, void and voidable marriages, the grounds of divorce and divorce by mutual consent, legitimacy of children, bigamy, jurisdiction and procedure, maintenance, alimony, custody and appeals. All 37 sections, with the Uttar Pradesh State amendment the Act carries.

An act to amend and codify the law relating to marriage among Hindus.

BE it enacted by Parliament in the Sixth Year of the Republic of India as follows:—

India Code's text is as on 15 April 2026. It carries the seven amending Acts up to the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Act, 2003, the later changes made by Act 6 of 2007, Act 6 of 2019 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 in its footnotes, and the Uttar Pradesh State amendment under section 13. The Act has no chapters; its six printed group headings are used as the divisions here.
