The Family Courts Act, 1984

India's law setting up Family Courts — their establishment in every city of over a million people, the appointment of Judges, the association of social welfare agencies and counsellors, jurisdiction over marriage, property, maintenance, legitimacy, guardianship and custody suits and over Chapter IX maintenance orders, the duty to attempt settlement, in camera hearings, legal representation, evidence, judgments, execution, appeals and revisions to the High Court, and rule-making powers. An Act to provide for the establishment of Family Courts with a view to promote conciliation in, and secure speedy settlement of, disputes relating to marriage and family affairs and for matters connected therewith.

BE it enacted by Parliament in the Thirty-fifth Year of the Republic of India as follows:—
